You can find the most up-to-date information by checking the Cal Trans website.
Checking Road Conditions
Before you head up to the mountains, it's essential to ensure you have the right equipment for your vehicle. It is a legal requirement in the mountain areas of California to carry chains during the winter season. Always consult Caltrans for the latest road and chain requirement information. You can reach them at the Caltrans Highway Information Network (CHIN) by calling +1-800-427-7623 or using Caltrans Quickmap for real-time updates.
Safety Advice
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) offers valuable advice for mountain travelers. Ensure you have a full tank of gas, and it's advisable to have tire chains on hand. Additionally, be aware that cell phone service is often limited in the mountains. Preparedness is key to a smooth and safe mountain journey.
Understanding Chain Requirement Levels
In California's mountain areas during the winter season, you might encounter traction chain controls. These controls are put in place to ensure everyone's safety. Signs along the road will indicate the type of requirement in effect. There are three levels of chain requirements in California:
Requirement 1 (R-1): Chains are mandatory on all vehicles, except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight, equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Vehicles using snow tires must carry chains. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.
Requirement 2 (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, except for four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Note that even these vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.
Requirement 3 (R3): Chains or traction devices are mandatory on all vehicles, without exceptions.
Remember, when chain requirements are in place, it's extremely dangerous to attempt the drive without them. Safety is of utmost importance.
